The Aldein alpine meadow hike to the pilgrimage site of Maria Weißenstein is a beautiful high-altitude and panoramic hike in southern South Tyrol, above Aldein in the Regglberg alpine region.

The trail connects wide alpine pastures, peaceful forest sections, and impressive views of the Dolomites and the Adige Valley. It is characterized by gentle high-level paths passing traditional mountain huts and light larch and spruce forests. The ascent is generally moderate, making it suitable for experienced leisure hikers and those who enjoy scenic walks.

The highlight of the hike is the well-known pilgrimage site Maria Weißenstein, one of the most important religious destinations in South Tyrol. The monastery complex is located in a basin at about 1,500 meters above sea level and offers a special atmosphere of nature, peace, and spirituality.

The hike is very varied in landscape: it ranges from open alpine meadows to quiet forest sections and ends with the impressive arrival at the historic monastery. It is especially popular in summer and autumn, when stable weather and clear visibility make the experience even more enjoyable.

    Author’s recommendation

    • Start early: conditions are often clearer and temperatures more pleasant in the morning.
    • Proper footwear: sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, as some sections are rooty or steeper.
    • Check the weather: the area is at higher altitude and weather can change quickly, especially towards Maria Weißenstein.
    • Bring enough water: there are not always refreshment stops along the route.
    • Follow the signage: the trails are well marked, but there are different variants (alpine meadow routes and pilgrimage path).
    • Respect grazing livestock: keep dogs on a leash and maintain distance from cows.
    • Use viewpoints: there are many scenic photo spots, especially towards the Dolomites and the Adige Valley.
    • Plan time for Maria Weißenstein: the sanctuary is worth a longer stop for its cultural and peaceful atmosphere.
