From the town hall square and the tourism association, the AVS hiking sign No. 3 leads over an old plague trail, also known as the Patersteig, from the village center through the forest to the well-known and very popular Montiggler Lakes, which are nestled in the charming forest landscape.
First, you follow Bahnhofstraße eastwards to a large roundabout, then turn right into Montiggler Straße and after about 500 meters, the hiking trail No. 3 branches off to the right at a left curve. The last houses and vineyards stay behind, and the wide forest path heads south through deciduous forest and thick-stemmed pines. Sometimes pay close attention to the markings, as there are many paths and trail forks. After just under an hour from Montiggler Straße, the forest path merges into a newly built bike road, which you follow until the first Montiggler vineyards appear at the forest edge. A little further south, you can already see the church tower of the hamlet Montiggl, a quiet, lovely village nestled in vine and fruit cultures. One does not at all suspect the nearby bathing lakes, which especially in summer are quite busy.
In a quarter of an hour from Montiggler Church, No. 5 leads past a hotel, then past the reed belt, directly to the Large Lake.
A hiking trail bypasses the bathing area on the west shore of the lake to its northern end. With No. 16 you soon reach the Small Montiggler Lake: small in size, but rich in intact nature.
There is again an opportunity to linger, enjoy or eat a snack before the return journey begins, which is considerably shorter.
Ascending on wide forest path No. 1 to a hilltop, then briefly somewhat steep downhill following the direction sign 2 Girlan, you hike to the parking lots of the Rungg sports zone. After crossing the access road to the fields, you continue a short way through forest in the same direction before the Überetsch with its castles and palaces presents itself at the foot of the Mendel range to the hiker. The following narrow paved road leads towards Girlan. After about 500 meters, No. 6 St. Michael branches off, through beautiful vineyards directly to the large roundabout. Bahnhofstraße leads back to the center.
