Roadbook
An impressive circular hike in the South Tyrolean lowlands high above Lake Kaltern.
The starting point is the small village of Gmund, directly at the junction of Traminerstraße and Klughammer. Parking is available opposite Viktor's Imbiss. In a short time we reach the forest and the path becomes really steep.
The goal is the unique rock formations high on the Mitterberg. The "Rosszähne" look like mighty horse teeth. The porphyry rocks rise up close together and form a unique work of nature. It is particularly interesting for children to climb through them and discover small caves. Again and again you can catch glorious panoramic views of the valley.
But that is not all!
A short detour to the Warm Air Springs is recommended, just a few metres further on. The protected natural monument is a very special natural phenomenon, as warm air flows out of these rock openings for reasons that have not yet been explained.
The view from here is simply breathtaking: the view opens up to Lake Kaltern, Tramin/Termeno and Kaltern/Caldaro, Auer/Ora, Neumarkt/Egna and Leifers/Laives. The ruins tower majestically.
You walk the short distance back again and follow the path towards Kalterer See/Lake Kaltern. Take a dip in the cool water before returning along the asphalt road to the starting point.
