Gfrill/Cauria - Königswiese: Fabulous beech groves and pictorial forests
Südtirols Süden
The hike from Gfrill to Königswiese is a peaceful circular trail in Trudner Horn Nature Park, leading through one of the most authentic and unspoilt landscapes of South Tyrol’s lowlands. The route crosses scenic mountain meadows, diverse mixed forests and enchanting beech woods that become especially impressive during the autumn season. Starting from the small mountain village of Gfrill, the trail climbs via Wiesenhof and Drei Fichtenhof to Königswiese, a forested summit at 1,622 metres. The summit cross and the peaceful woodland surroundings create a perfect place to rest and enjoy nature. With some luck, hikers may spot chamois or rare forest birds along the way. The combination of quiet forests, natural beauty and untouched landscapes makes this hike a wonderful experience for families and nature lovers.

The tour to Königswiese/Prato del Rè starts at the parking place in Gfrill/Cauria at the right side of the hamlet, entering the hiking path number 4. This path passes several meadows and grasslands, past the "Wiesenhof", the "Aalbach" and the "Drei Fichtenhof", localized near the Königswiese/Prato del Rè. At this point, the hiking path number 4a goes through fabulous beech groves and pictorial forests. With a bit of luck, woodpeckers and chamois can be seen and heard. Right before the Königswiese/Prato del Rè, the walk turns into the hiking path number 6 to reach the Königswiese/Prato del Rè on 1.622m above sea level, where since 2013 a summit cross is arranged. The hiking path number 6 leads back to "Dre Fichtenhof" and through the wood you can slightly recognize some parts of Gfrill/Cauria. Arriving at "Wiesenhof" there is the possibility to visit the pictorial chapel "Virgin Mary" infestation in the meadows" (German "Maria Heimsuchung in der Wiese"), which was built by the aristocratic family von Feigenputz in 1680.
