The Sommerfrischweg on the Ritten tells the story of a time when spending the summer in the mountains was an important part of city life. As early as the beginning of the 16th century, wealthy families from Bolzano came to the high plateau during the summer months to escape the heat.
With the construction of the cog Ritten Railway at the beginning of the 20th century, this tradition became even stronger and made the Ritten the “cradle of summer holidays”.
The Sommerfrischweg connects nature, history, and local culture in a unique way. Personalities such as Karl Theodor Hoeniger also described that a house on the Ritten indicated high social status.
In addition to its historical importance, the trail is known for its beautiful landscape. Along the way, visitors can enjoy impressive views of the Dolomites and the Bolzano valley. The peaceful atmosphere, well-kept cultural landscape, and traditional buildings make the Sommerfrischweg a special place for relaxation and cultural reflection.
