Although not high above the main town of St. Michael | Eppan, the little Gleifkirchlein perched on Kalvarienberg immediately catches the eye – the view is surprisingly extensive and it stands on one of the most beautiful glacial grooves in the Bolzano area.

Requirement: near the village asphalt road, then pleasant hiking paths, partly through forest, partly through vineyards and orchards

    Author’s recommendation

Shorten the tour and hike from the ice holes to Stroblhof, from where the town center can be quickly reached.

    Roadbook

From the town hall square of St. Michael, past the yellow elementary school building and the Raiffeisen hall, the path is well signposted and leads in pleasant switchbacks through deciduous forest and vineyards up the Gleif hill in half an hour. After exploring the various grooves and channels as well as the somewhat behind lying Devil's Chair (a larger hollow left by the meltwater of the glaciers over thousands of years), you walk on the access road to Gleifkirche towards Moos-Schulthaus castle. Further south at the curve, the signposted hiking trail No. 15 branches off to the right.

On this trail leading into the forest, the famous ice holes are reached in half an hour. It is really impressive how the vegetation and air change suddenly even on hot summer days, making you almost shiver.

After extensive exploration, continue on the trail with No. 15 until Mendelstraße is reached. Follow this down about 500 meters along the sidewalk of Andreas-Hofer-Straße until shortly the new housing estates of Obere and Untere Gand are reached. A pedestrian promenade branching off to the left leads traffic-free past the cultural center and school back to the starting point in the center.
