Eppan has a distinctive architectural character: medieval castles, palaces and manor houses, stately farmsteads, as well as more recent aristocratic villas, shaped by viticulture in a gentle hilly landscape.

The stroller-friendly hike starts from Town Hall Square St. Michael. Next to the yellow elementary school building, follow the AVS wooden signpost 8/A St. Pauls, and go on a scenic route through vineyards with views of the Schlern and the church tower of St. Pauls until a crossroads. Here turn left following the Missian signpost and then again the marking 8/A, which leads to the pretty Justinakirchlein. After a rest under the linden tree, head southwards on 8/A to the fire station of the Eppan | Berg district (city bus stop).

At the Melag manor, the path now runs along a narrow lane southwards towards the large Freudenstein Castle. Valentin Castle on the upper right as well as stately Überetsch farmhouses hint at the wealth of this formerly noble area. Passing the large castle complex of Freudenstein and ascending along Matschatscherweg (street sign), the Steinegger inn is reached shortly.

A magnificent view offers the city of Bolzano in the valley basin, above it the Schlern and the Seiser Alm, Latemar, Weiß- & Schwarzhorn and in the background the mountains of the Fleimstal. Following the 8/B signpost, go down to the next intersection with the brown Castle signpost Schloss Moos-Schulthaus (possible visit).

In sight are now the St. Sebastian chapel belonging to Englar as well as the magnificent, still in use building ensemble of Schloss Englar and Schloss Gandegg. The signpost with No. 540 leads traffic-free back to the starting point.
