On this tour, you will discover the charming rocky gorge "Grauner Joch." Cycling along bike paths and forest roads, you travel from Kaltern to Graun. In Tramin, you reach the other side of the valley at the foot of the Mitterberg. On the way back, you cycle past Lake Kaltern and through the picturesque Lavasontal. The tour is technically not difficult, except for a few downhill sections which can be crossed by pushing.

    Author’s recommendation

The tour is rideable almost all year round; in summer, you can plan a jump into Lake Kaltern. Definitely: enjoy viewpoints between Altenburg and "Grauner Joch."

    Roadbook

From the Town Hall Square in St. Michael via Path 22 "Überetscher Walking Route," you reach the bike path that leads comfortably to Kaltern. Passing the wineries, at the roundabout, turn onto the slightly ascending road. There, continue on Maria-Theresien-Straße up to the junction connecting the pedestrian and bike path, which leads to the valley station of the Mendelbahn cable car. Now you cross the station on the ascending Path No. 11 towards "Altenburg – Sport Zone St. Anton." Upon reaching the sports zone, you enter the forest and follow the marking "Peace Trail" (marked by a white dot); a gentle up and down leads to Altenburg. Arriving at the parking lot by the road, you leave the path and continue on the paved road. At the castle, it's worth taking a short break and walking to the viewpoint, which offers a wonderful view of Lake Kaltern, past which the return route of this tour passes. Continue for about 1.5 km on the road southward. Before it slopes further down, take the forest road towards "Zogglerwiese." First follow the Marking 4/B, then 4/A towards Graun on a mix of short asphalt sections and forest roads leading to the highest point of this tour at approximately 850 m above sea level. Here, pass a wine tavern offering a spectacular view of the entire valley and nearby mountain peaks. Continue about 1 km south. Once the road slopes downhill, merge onto the path on the left and begin the return. Initially on asphalt, then on the bike path in the forest, proceed until you reach Lochweg No. 5, which leads into the valley down to Tramin. At first, the descent is very flowing, but once you reach "Grauner Joch," a small rocky gorge, the situation changes drastically: steps, stones, and rocks increase the technical difficulty. Therefore, you should carry your bike on your shoulders while climbing the gorge, thus overcoming difficult stone steps. The further you go, the easier the path becomes, and experienced cyclists can now enjoy the rest of the descent while less experienced cyclists are advised to dismount and push. You now reach the center of the village, pass by the church, and turn right onto Wolkensteinstraße, crossing the state road and continuing toward the fields. At the first fork, turn left and continue to the Tramin swimming pool. Here, turn right onto the state road towards Auer, cross the roundabout, and after about 1.5 km, turn left towards Klughammer. Continue along the mountain and Lake Kaltern heading north until you reach the junction of the bike path. Among Kaltern's vineyards, you now ascend to the bike path junction towards Bolzano, which leads back through Lavasontal and to St. Michael.
