This tour is rich in single trails and leads over the Kalterer Höhenweg, which can also be planned as an extension of the Eppaner Höhenweg. The route offers a great view of the entire Überetsch, the Montiggler Lakes, and Lake Kaltern, framed by the magnificent Dolomites.

Starting from the St. Michael town hall square, you immediately begin the ascent on trail marker No. 540, initially towards Pigeno, then on an increasingly steep climb to the Gasthof Steinegger. From here, keep left and continue climbing on a gravel path, first steep, then more pleasant, following marker No. 7 towards Matschatsch. Once you reach the Jägerwiese, continue uphill on the path leading to the castle, and immediately to the left you will find the entrance to the Kalterer Höhenweg. If you want to take a break, you can aim for the nearby castle and then return to the trail. Continuing on trail No. 9 (Kalterer Höhe), you descend via a beautiful trail that crosses the Mendel road several times. Once you reach the second hairpin bend, you follow it on the path and at the next junction continue further on trail marker No. 9 towards Altenburg. You cross the road, pass the red house on the right, and turn onto the ascending forest road Nikolausberg. The Höhenweg alternates between ascending and descending, crossing small streams several times. After a good stretch, you pass the Mendelbahn station and continue on gravel roads and beautiful trails. After a quick descent, you reach the Ziegelstadl, and after crossing the wooden bridge, a wonderful descent towards Altenburg along the Rastenbach begins. At the end of the path, you descend on an asphalt road past a restaurant where you can take a well-deserved break and recharge for the return trip. Now you head back onto the road for about 600 m towards Kaltern to the parking lot located by the road. From here, the Friedensweg leads first on marker No. 13, then No. 10, to the Kaltern vineyards. Through the village center, you continue until you reach the bike path that comfortably brings you back to the starting point.
Author’s recommendation
Thanks to the altitude and the almost entirely forested route, the tour can also be ridden on hot summer days.
